How Generational Differences Impact How You Communicate
Well-trained brain and sharp mind can help you immensely, no matter how old you are. There are many methods how to push your brain activity to
The business climate in which we work in is very different than it has been in the past.
The workforce consists of several generations of workers, each with their own communication styles, trying to work cohesively together.
According to an article published by UC Santa Cruz, there are currently four generations that make up today’s workforce. Understanding each of these demographics and how to effectively work and communicate with each of them can help you grow your real estate investing business.
The four generations, according to the report, are as follows:
Traditionalists:
Typically defined as people born between 1925 and 1942. This generation is known for being dedicated to their work and valuing working hard. They understand that there are sometimes sacrifices that need to be made to be successful. They can be described as old-fashioned and conservative.
Baby Boomers:
Baby boomers were born between 1943 and 1960 and like the earlier generation, are known for being hard workers. They also tend to work well in teams and hold an optimistic outlook on life and business.
Generation X:
Born between 1961 and 1981, Generation Xers have a stereotype of being slackers and self-centered. However, they are also very self-reliant and value a balance between their work and social lives.
Millennials:
Millennials are defined as people born between 1982 and 2002. This generation thrives on a fast-paced work environment and tends to be better at multi-tasking than the other generations.
These definitions are not all-inclusive. If a person is born on the edge of two generations, they may encompass the values and characteristics of two generations. By improving your communication skills, you can learn how to quickly evaluate what a person may value and adjust your pitch to fit the situation. This will allow you to take steps that can make a drastic difference in the effectiveness of doing business across generations.
If you are a part of one of the younger generations, keep in mind that you need to respect the many years of experience that the older generations have. You should also remember that they may not be as reliant on technology, and striking a good balance between verbal vs. tech-based communication is key. Take the opportunity to learn from the experiences of the older generations you are working with; they are a great learning resource.
For older generations working with the younger crowd, remember that Generation X and Millennials tend to use more technology, thrive on working in a fast-paced environment and may lean more importance on their social life and work/life balance than older generations.
Obviously, these characteristics are not guaranteed to be present in every person in each generation, but it should give you an idea of how you can fine-tune your communication skills to the wants and needs of the people you are working with. Just being cognizant of the age differences can make a huge impact on your business results.
